Hi all!

I came accross your site when looking for some information on a filter unit and I am truly impressed! So much so that I have decided to join!

I have been keeping cold and tropical fish for about 5 years and during that time we have had our fair amount of issues! The majority when I switched from cold to tropical and had a faulty filter unit, we lost a lot of fish trying to sort that one out, sadly.

I have just upgraded from this 27 litre tank:

We have had this for about 3-4 years. The light unit failed and it was just too small, so an upgrade was required.

Enter the new tank:

An Interpet Fishbox 65 Litre.

This does us, it's just the right size for the room but still gives us a good volume of water. I purchased it from the wonderful ebay at a knock-down rate! (typical Yorkshireman!)

I used the water from the old tank, plus the gravel (horrible multi-coloured stuff) and the old filter running in parallel with the new Interpet PF2 and I intend to keep it running in paralell for another 4 weeks or so. But it seems to have gone okay and the water quality is good and the fish are happy so all-in-all it's worked out very well, with out costing an arm and a leg.

Will be looking to increase my stock of fish in few weeks time, it's a community tank so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Well that's me, I look forward to being part of the forum from now on.

Looks like you could use some plants in there. I'd just up the numbers of rasboras, etc. so they're in bigger groups. And of course, change out the gravel! What's the filter you have on the right?

I agree about the plants! Don't worry I haven't forgotten them, they are on order! Increasing the Rasboras is a good idea, but I was also thinking of some bottom feeders, perhaps some Corydoras Leucomelas but I have no experience of these, any tips?

I intend to change the gravel in time, but wanted to keep all the old media and gravel to help bed in the new tank quicker, I think that was the right thing to do, certainly made sense in my mind!

The filter on the right is the new Interpet PF2 pumping around 500L per hour.

Welcome to forum Pete,

A suggestion for you - rather than running the 2 filters in parallel (assuming you are chucking out the old tank), just put all the filter media from the old filter into the new filter, and top it back up with the new media you've just bought.

Job done, happy days!

Hi Lock-man,

I hear what you're saying, but I'm not throwing the other tank, it's going to be re-homed upstairs with my 10 year old lad (never too young to start!) which is one reason I'm running both. In a few weeks or so, I'll be transferring it back and cycling the old tank with that filter so that he can have some fish as well!

Nah... No where near :D haha.

Hows things going with the tank?

Yeah, seems to be going fine mate thanks. Water is clear as a bell and all the tests are within limits and stable. Fish certainly seem to be enjoying their new home. All very lively and feeding well (not that they ever didn't!).

I started a thread about stocking HERE and it seems to have taken a slght turn to talking about my hump back Zebra Danio, which I blame on my local TFS. Have a look and see what you think.
