Hi everyone.

I'm new to this site and hope you can answer my question. I have green water in my tank and its murky so i can't see my fish, only if they come to the front of the tank! there is no algae in the tank and i've been told to cover the tank and switch the lights off. I've done this for 3 days and i changed my water and cleaned out my filter before that. Can anyone help! I also want to get a new gravel vacuum and am willing to spend the money on getting a good one. any recommendations?

Thanks a lot, i just want to enjoy my fish again!

Have you tested your water? If not I would suggest you do as the chances are you have ammonia in the water.

Ammonia and Light = Algae Bloom
Not everyone gets them, but some do. And to get rid of them the black out method is often very effective.

But then to stop them returning you need to work out if it was too much light, ammonia or a bit of both that caused the problem.

How long are your lights on for a day?

Does any sunlight hit the tank?

As for a gravel vac, I'll have a quick look on ebay. What height is the tank?

Thanks..its 30 cm h x 50 L. I'll try and get an ammonia test kit. I have a kit for ph nitrates etc but don't know if there is a kit just for ammonia?

Are you using test strips at the moment?

Or a liquid kit?

There are kits for just ammonia. But if you're using test strips then I'd recommend getting a full liquid test kit as opposed to just an ammonia one.
