Hi,
Having got my tank cycled over a couple of months I added fish and all was well until the air pump syphoning disaster which emptied the tank overnight and did for most of the fish (a previous thread). Having got going again with the survivors (2 Corys and 1 Zebra Danio (the chosen one))I then suffered mega green hair algae attack on everything (another thread), I think I'm getting that under control with several 60% water changes and then adding some Seachem Prime, however now I have cloudy green water which doesn't seem to be responding to the changes/Prime treatment. What to do now? I don't wan't to too many more fish (5 more zebras added to keep the chosen one company)until things are stabilised. Readings are all ok and zero, temp 26 deg C, lighting on for 10 hours, a little direct sun but not much (W Scotland)tank is 125 litres. What to do now??????

Its an algal bloom, turn off the tank lights & then blackout the tank, chuck a duvet or blanket over it for 4 days, dont peak inside. Your fish will be fine & so will any plants if you have them but algea need light & will perish in that 4 days.

After 4 days, uncover the tank & do a bigish w/c.

One other thing 10 hours of light a day is probably causing your algea probs, turn it down a tad, 8 hours should do it.

If you cut back on the light cycle the green water algae will take care of itself over a fairly short time, like a few weeks. I used to try to maintain an active green water culture to feed my moina but could never pour enough light into my tank to keep the culture going. I finally gave up and started using an artificial feed for them.
