well I work at a local petsmart (been doing it since end of sophmore year in high school now I'm fixing to be sophmore in college just kinda something I've been doing, I know some of you guys hate the place but hey it pays me money and I get cheap hardgoods (buy my fish from lfs' still)) so anyway a lady brought a jack dempsy up to work looking for it a new home, and since petsmart doesn't take fish that are alive and re sell them or anything I took him home, right now he's residing in my new 10g project that's just got underway (luckily no plants are in the tank yet that I've been planning on doing). Last night I did find a cheap 20 long on line that I'll be picking up today and so jack will move into the 20long, I figure this will be adequate space for the one fish for a while (he's about 3-3.5" right now) only problem is that the tank isn't cycled and I'm afraid to steal the biowheel from my 55g (has a canister filter and an emp 280 on it but like I said kind of scared to steal the biowheel b/c I don't want to put my 55 into a mini cycle, so instead I'll probably be doing 50% water changes every other day, I hope the dempsy can handle the bit of ammonia, but I figure once it's established it'll be a nice home for him, and hopefully by the time he gets bigger I'll be able to find him a new bigger home either w/ me or elsewhere.

enough talk here's the fish:

o yeah and man is he a jumper I have a plexiglass cover over this tank w/ a cut out for the filter and heater to go in so I set a textbook on top of lid to keep him from pushing it up but some how at 1 30am last night I heard a splash and thump while I saw trying to sleep, he somehow jumped between the filter and the cover onto the floor (from about 4' up on the dresser so he took a pretty good fall, he's been kinda timid today since then but hopefully he'll be alright. needless to say I covered up ANY openings w/ plastic and books so no more jumping I hope :p

Lovley fish ! Just make sure you do lots of water changes while it's still cycling to keep ammonia / nitrites down.

love his colous. He looks helthy.Well done for saving him :D he is gonna love his new home!

Grab some gravel from your established tank and throw it in your new one to help with the cycle.... JD's are mean buggers and your looking at a species tank and you'll definately have to upgrade as they can hit 8-9". I think min tank for a full grown one is 45-50gal but obviously bigger is better.

Great lookin fish!!

His colors are beautiful. He will do ok in his new home. Cant you still some gravel and put in a nylon sock to help cycle your 20 gallon??This will speed things up some..He is so pretty. I would love to have him.

I love Jack Dempseys. And he's gorgeous. I have a big bugger of a jack dempsey and he's 9" and would love to eat my hand as a tasty treat.

yeah guess I could scoop some sand out of another tank and stick it in there maybe it'd speed things up a bit, I hate having to cycle tanks :p but I"m not about to pay 15 bucks a pop for biospira so lots of water changes are to come.
