I have a female swordtail (no males, but males of guppies and mollies) anyways, my female sword is huge, (her stomach area) and she has a black gravid spot, my question is, is a gravid spot a givin that they're pregnant? She's been getting bigger each day, and sticks with her younger sister (she's about 7-8 months old and her sister is about 5 months old) anyways, she seems to be eating a lot and stuff, but how could she be pregnant with no males in the tank? At one point (about 3-4 months ago) I had a male swordtail, do you think she retained the sperm until she was ready? Being now? That's the only way that she'd be able to get pregnant, can livebearers hold the sperm till they want to?
Anyone know what's going on with her.., lol, It'd be greatly appreciated

EDIT:
She's a pineapple swordtail, meaning I can see the black spot in near her fin

Yeah she has stored the sperm from your old male. STs cant breed with guppies and mollys but can with platys. Guppies and mollys can breed together but not with platys or STs.

Oh, ok thanks! 'cause she sure looks like she's pregnant, she's been big for a while, but the last 2-3 weeks she's had that black spot getting darker (so maybe she was just overfed before that)

At 3 or 4 months since she last saw a male, she could still be using stored sperm packets but not for much longer. If you want some fry from her and the male that was once with her, you should try to save some from this drop. After she passes the 6 months mark, it is unlikely that she will still be capable of producing more fry.

oh ok thanks!

here's a pic, I had to take it with my phone, so it's really bad quality, but you can see how big she is,
unfortunately, the gravid spot didn't get captured with my phone camera (but she does have one!)

See, I can't tell if she is pregnant or just fat, but that's why I was wondering about the black spot (it looks like a gravid spot)

Don't go by the color or the size. Both can be misleading. I always go by shape instead. If she has taken on a square look to her abdomen, she is probably getting close to a fry drop.

No sign of babies today, she's still prett fat though, but not really squared off, so I dunno...

EDIT:
I just looked at Oldman's pictures of his molly before she gave birth, mine is not squared off, so she should be getting bigger still then maybe in a week or so she'll have em! :)
