For plants does it matter if you have stones or gravel?

what it is,
I hate small gravel. i would rather have a mixture of stones from your pinky nail size up to Lava stone and fist size stones in my tank.

Does it matter with plants if you dont use gravel?

If you get Java fern it won't matter. Java fern can be attatched to rocks or wood and will be just fine. The rest of the plants won't like having their roots squished by big rock so gravel is better in that regard.

I agree with Rose. The vast majority of tropical aquatic plants come from areas with fine silty sand as their substrate. They are not designed to have large quantities of oxygenated water flowing around their roots. Some of the more robust ones will grow well in gravel, but few would tolerate large stones.

What of course you can do, is plant your plants in pots, then bury the pots in the stones.
