Ok so today i posted what do i need?

Well now i have just brought a 4ft fish tank witch comes with fish, heater ect but the filter has just stopped working will i still need to do a Cycle ?

Also what size filter will i need for a 4ft fish tank?

4 foot tank doesn't exactly help us...

Depending on the depth and width, the tank could be bigger or smaller, so we need you to calculate the gallons. I've long since forgotten how to calculate the gallons, though if you're working in liters I can offer that 3.78 liters make one gallon.

As for needing to recycle... have you fixed the filter or are you adding a new one? If it is the former, you might still have to continue it, though hopefully not for too long. If it is the latter, transfer media from the old filter to the new to facilitate bacteria growth, though you will definitely need to give it some more time. -- Rereading your post, simply disregard the "fixing old filter" portion.

Also, if you have the funds and are willing to invest in a new filter, please consider a canister filter instead of just the HOB (hang on back) filters, since they are often adjustable and customizable, and, in general, significantly better filters.

Also, the tank size would help us figure out which type/ size of filter to get.

Good luck

theres an aquarium calaculater thats very easy to use at the top right hand corner of the page :)

which filter depends on the size in litres/gallons of the tank, and the kind of fish you want to keep, its always better to be over filtered rather than under :)

ive got many many tanks. i love my fluval fx5. its a canister filter system. easy upkeep. just a little pricey.

47" X 15" X 15"

Will buy a new filter still have the old one witch sponges

We have the sponges in the water, buying a new filter tonight after getting a friend who is an electrition to look at it and he said it can not be fixed

Your tank is a nominal 50 gallon tank. I would suggest a Rena XP2 or one of the Tetra-Tec 600 filters. I am running an XP2 on 55 gallon tank and it is doing a fine job of keeping it clean and properly filtered with a heavy biological load of small fish, it is my fry grow-out tank. If you put the sponges into the new canister filter, the tank should be fine. It would be worthwhile to test the water a few times over the next few days just t make sure that all is well and you have not lost a significant part of the filter bacteria.

Yes, agree with OM47, those Renas or TTecs sound good or an Eheim Pro2 2026 or 2028 would be great if you could find it and didn't consider it too expensive.
