Good Idea?

I have a sand substrate in a wall aquarium, so many of you will know how awkward it can be manovuring the sand twice a week in a narrow deep tank 5 and a half foot high. I have recently bought a magnet cleaner which most of you may have that cleans the inside glass aswell as the outside.

My question is ....

Can i use the magnet trick in the sand? if u bury a magnet in the sand & the other on the outside underneath will it work? & will it be safe for the fish?

You will scratch the glass with the sand very quickly, if you do that. Best to just get a long blade-type cleaner to do near the sand, you should be able to use the same to stir the sand when needed.

You cant really se the glass at the bottom tho cos its covered in sand.
I just thought that if the sand needs to be disturbed every so often this would be alot easier, no need to go inside the tank.

Why not just keep Malaysian Trumpet Snails? MTS do enough day-to-day disturbing. Anyway, I have found that turning the sand once per week is enough for most aquariums.. is there a particular reason why you do it more often?

No particular reason really. I just read that twice a week is sufficient, but ill do it once now.
I like the snails idea, i wouldnt know where to get them as my LFS is pets at home & im pretty sure they dont have them.

They're considered to be pests by most people, you're bound to be able to get a few free from the LFS, or ask on here.

though a good idea. it wont work, too much weight for a "reasonable" sized magnet.

i have a question though.

Why? though sand can harbour gasses, they are of no harm to fish. the worst they cause is a faint smell of sulphur, when it gasses. and moving the sand is a massive disruption to the environment.

I just wondering if it was possible to break up the fish waste on the base this way, without going inside the tank.

Oh i see. i think that will still need a syphon, gravel vac. though if you add an air curtain along the back of the tank. it draws the waste there, making it a bit better to remove.
