Hello, I am new to this forum! I have search quite a few places and look around to see how to care for goldfishes, but no matter what I do, it seems my tank gets cloudy after a couple of hours...

Here is my setup:

33 Gallon Tank
UnderGravel Filter (Using Air To Propell Water)
Gravel
Air Pump
150W Heater
4 Goldfishes (2 of them is as big as my hand...)

So far, I added simple power filters, but I used to have a Canister Filter from Marineland, and when I first bought it, it filters really good for 5 days, then it's all clogged up and I have to clean it every 2 days to keep it clean and water flowing, which is not what I want...

*This is the filter I used: http://www.bigalsonline.ca/BigAlsCA/ctl366...350deluxefilter

Therefore, is there any filter or recommendation that you guys can give me so I can keep my tank clean enough so I don't have to change filters and water (30-50% water change) every 1-3 days?

Thanks!

It depends on how long the tank has been set up for. If it is new (less than 1 month) then the filters have probably not developed properly yet and this will be part of the problem. The other thing is to reduce the amount of food going into the tank. The more food the more mess and the more work to keep the tank clean. Goldfish don't need to be fed every day and because you have a couple of big fish in the tank it is just going to make the problem worse. Try feeding once a day or even every second day and make sure there is at least 2 inches of gravel over the undergravel filter, preferably 3-4inches.
And as mentioned by Jen with the zebra peckoltia, goldfish are fine without heaters. If you have really fancy goldfish like lionheads and bubble-eyes you can have a heater in the tank and set it on about 18-22C but it doesn't have to be higher for them. Normal house temperatures are fine for the fancy varieties.

I recommend getting a canister filter that is rated for atleast twice the size of your tank. For a 30g, fluval 305, rena xp2

There are a number of different filter media available for that filter, the magnum 350. If you are plugging up in 2 days, chances are you are using the polishing filter cartridge. Look at the LFS for other options such as a set up for primarily biofiltration. It should last longer and do a better job for you. I have never owned a 350 but I know from others who have that they are very flexible good filters. I would try changing media before just throwing out a perfectly good filter. Others have already pointed out that you are keeping cold water fish that don't need much artificial heat so no point in going down that path again.

That magnum filter should work fine as long as the proper insert is used. that would be the round plastic deal with the plastic mesh on it. (as seen in the picture on the website) put media inside it (ceramic works well) then the blue foam sleeve goes over it.

I have the hang on tank version of that cannister (HOT Magnum) It works really well. I have it setup the way i have described above and i only have to clean it once a month if that. Then all i do is remove the insert and swish it and the blue foam sleeve around in a bucket of used tank water. It takes like five minutes.

I also shut the cannister filter off during feeding so it doesn't suck up food, this cuts down on the maintenance a lot.
