Yesterday a friend of my hubby turned up with a bag with 2 silver tip tetra, a rosy tetra and a plec asking if I could have them! If I had of known he was comming I could have set up a spare tank (somehow) so I had no choice but to put them in the tank with the Ellioti and my female texas, the Ellioti were not fussed about the tetra but the texas was constantly watching them, she chased them a lot, but with putting in a load of floating plants for cover she didnt catch them. I thought when I got up this morning the tera would be gone, but no my lovely texas was being used as breakfast by the 3 plecs, she was a healthy fish and the only thing I can think is she must have exhausted herself trying to catch the tetra

Blimey, that's very sad.

Is there any chance the plec could have been super aggressive and killed your Texas, or perhaps the addition of new fish upset the harmony between your Elloti and Texas?

Strange, maybe it was just a coincidence, could'nt imagine a fish dying from chasing a tetra around the tank, possible, did you look at his first prior to adding them for poss dieseases? Have you checked the water quality to make sure tank didnt spike or heater getting knocked and upping temp?

Just going with whats occoured in my time

sorry to hear

That's very sad.

THe moral of the story is to NEVER accept any fish that people, even loved ones, turn up with. It's putting ones own fish in too much risk IMO.

I am not 100% sure what happened to her as she was rather chewed up this morning. I put the new fish in a plastic box and added water from the tank then once they were aclimatised added them to the tank, did a water change and added melafix (which I have used with the texas before so I know it wasnt that). Its what I always do with strange fish (except Minxy's  ) Tico (the texas) had spawned last week and guarded the unfertile eggs for a couple of days, but apart from a bit of flaring the Ellioti were no problem as they are a group of 10 and tend to bicker amongst themselves. Watching her though she constantly watched the 2 silver tip tetra, the rosey she wasnt bothered with? and she did keep giving chase to them, so I added some floating plants for the tetra to hide, whether she grabbed a mouthfull of plant and choked or something odd I just dont know. Or whether she was already weak from spawning and the annoyance of the tetra just finished her off I just dont know. I suppose the plec could be a possibility, I have had a rouge plec before but this one seems pretty calm and is more interested in the other 2? I am just so upset at loosing her. I should have set up another tank, it would have only taken an hour or so but was concerned about leaving the fish in the bag so long as it was so hot.

Don't beat your self up over it. This was a freak thing and there was no way you knew this would happen. That is really weird and sad so sorry. It might have been stress from the spawn and then stress from guarding. Or did the male Texas kill her? he might have have been ready to spawn again and she was not. Then boom dead mama. you know It's not uncommon for cichlid love to turn sour In the blink of an eye.

Thanks snowflake, It wasnt the male texas she was on her own, unless one of the Ellioti :hyper: Just something I will never find the answer to.

She was about 3-4" a lot smaller than the others. who are about 6-7"

Sorry for your loss, I had a discus earlier this year that was a really pretty Pigeon Blood and died without any reasons and I even talked to the breeder who is a big importer who told my it isn't super uncommon for them to spook and swim into the glass at a high speed and die :/
