I am new to looking after fish my brother usually helps me sort them out. My goldfish which was moved from cold water to warm water tank 6 months ago started to lie on bottom of tank more than usual. I starved the fish for couple of days just incase it was swim bladder, but she didnt seem to get any better. Yesterday i thought she was dead but when i lifted her she started breathing and trying to swim (with no success) she had been swimming twisted for couple days . She is not bloated but is lying at bottom of tank while the other fish are now starting to nip her tail. I seperated her and now she seems to be hibernating (if thats possible) she seems to have switched off but evry now and then shes taking a breath. None of the other fish seem affected and are swimming and feeding fine. Is there any hope for her or is she slowly dying?

Thanx

Why did you put the goldfish in a warm water tank? Goldfish are cold water fish and don't need to be in tropical tank conditions.

The fish is probably very stressed at the moment.

Also, what are your water stats? Ammonia? Nitrite? Nitrate?

These are important in order to tell if it is a toxin problem or something else.

For now, make sure the fish is back in a coldwater tank (hopefully you still have your other tank set up with a cycled filter). You may need to treat with an anti-bacterial medication if the goldfish doesn't perk up.

If she has swimbladder then you could try feeding her some squashed pea. I've never heard of starving a fish with swimbladder, though. Swimbladder can be caused by sudden changes in water temp/shock, or bacterial infection.

ps - what temp is the tank the goldfish is in now?

When i bought the fish it was in warm tank at temp of 22 they said it would be alright if i put it in cold water it would adapt. When my brother set up warm tank he put let goldfish get used to water then put her in. She wouldnt eat anything anyway i tried feeding her by hand and wasnt for it.

You might find more help over on the coldwater section of the forums -

I don't know a great deal about goldfish and what types of meds to use, so I think if you post your query over there, or have a search through some of the posts regarding sick goldfish, you might find more detailed help.

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Swimming twised can be bacterial to internal parasites.
Does the fish look thin.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
Check the anus to see if its red inflamed or enlarged.
Does the fish look pale or darker in colour.
Is the fish acting listless and lethagic.

She hasn't moved all night she seems dead then she gives a small breath, shes got discolouring on side she is floating onto apart from that no other discolouring or inflaming its just that she looks dead.

Its a 3foot tank my brother deals with technical side of it so dont know other specs sorry

thanx

Without water stats is not going to be easy.
How many other fish are in the tank.
Immediate water change and add a bacterial med.
Increase aeration.
The discolouring on her side what colour and does it look bleached out or fluffy looking.

It looks bruised she is silver and its purple/gold colouring just on the bend, shes been swimming to that side and half twisting not swimming straight.
There are 3 neons and 3 silver sharks the sharks are just 3inches long and neons are tiny. They dont seem to be affected yet.
Her scales are not fluffy tho are looking slightly seethru now .

The bruising is it beneath the skin,.
Is it possible to load a pic up onto the site of the sick fish.

The tanks overstocked the first common goldifsh need 20 gallon and then 10 gallons for every other one added.
Fancy goldfish the first one need 15 gallon and 10 gallons for every other one added.
Goldfish need double filteration as they are massive waste producers.

The tanks to small for the bala sharks they need 100 gallon tanks.
I would do an immediate water change and add a bacterial med.
To be honest it dosn't sound like the goldfish is going to make it.

phpllkCrb_c3AM_2_.jpgsorry about quality

Thats bad.
All you can do is a water change and try a bacterial med.
But it looks to late to save the fish as its in a very bad way.

I didnt really think she would survive but iv had her 3 years and the only fish iv known that came up to surface to get clapped (i know i sound like a wierdo but i dont care lol). Im worried incase its something else and will harm rest of tank.

Thanx for your help
