Hi does any body have any of these in there ponds. Im in the proccess of building my pond and im thinking about adding these fish.

The dimensions will be something like 7ft by 10ft by ranging between 2ft to 3.5ft. For stocking i was thinking about a small shoal of goldfish/shibunkins (5-8) and a bigger shoal of golden rudd (10+) and then a couple of golden tench.

My only concern is how visable the rudd will be when viewed from above?

Does anybody keep them in their ponds? if so how how visible are they. I know some range from silvery orange to having dark backs with very orange flanks, so il be looking for the brightest fish i can get.

Thanks in advance Lloyd

I owned a golden rudd, many, many years ago. Looked brilliant in the tank I grew him on in, disappeared once he got into the pond; couldn't see him at all!

Thats what im worried about but in your case it may well be because you just had the one? they are beautiful fish and iv seen some beautiful specimens in shops. i just cant find many images or vids onthe web of people keeping them in proper numbers so its hard to gage what impact theyll have in a pond

Well, when I say 'disappeared', I meant that his back was so dark you couldn't see him; you could see him swimming round, but only by looking closely; he didn't stand out at all.

He got darker as he got older as well.

Yeah, I know; sorry!

Better to know now than when you've already got them?

Thats true. im still hopeful they can be an attractive addition to the pond though

Rudd look great from the side but really not so exciting from above. If you like the shoaling, shape and golden colour, golden orfe would be a better match :)

With the difference of 5 or 10 cm.... Orfe are hardly much bigger than Rudd! Rudd can hit lengths of 45-50cm and Orfe 55-60cm.

Quite true but rudd are very slow growing and and a 12incher is considered very big for a garden pond. more like 8 inch is expected. orfe however are very fast growing and 12 inch is considered small. its like saying goldfish can hit 18 inches so youmay as well get a koi
