Gold Fish And Tropical Fish

well, they seem to be happy as can be.
and, due to lack of funds, they'll have to stay that way for a while, until i can afford a bigger tank.

and i got most of my fish for free. so im not going to complain either.
Have you read the pinned topic on goldfish? They may 'seem' happy right now, but in the future.... Your new tank better come pretty darn soon and be big(70 gals) :good: .

i kept 2 goldfish in a tropical tank with mollie's, a betta, a red finned (rainbow) shark and some neons,

They were quite small when i put them in there, but when i out them in the tropical tank they grew like mad. They doubled in size in about 6 months and when they got large enough, started taking bites out of my neons, So i gave them to my niece in a small tank.

She killed them with hair spay...... sad.gif

Just remember, all fish grow, whether they're happy or not (unless they're stunted from being in too small of a tank).

i've had 2 goldfish in my tropical tank for 6 months now and they're so much healthier than they were in own unheated tank, they're more lively eat better and their colours are much brighter. they've not had a single disease, where i would definately have seen a couple by now in old tank, and they don't bother anyone. at the moment they're living with tetras plecs guppies corys and a silver dollar, and they pick at the gravel more than the corys and plec put together, they're definately a benefit to the gravel lol! they also used to share with angels but they're in a tank of their own with corys now. at feeding time the goldies (marlon and bruce if you're wondering ) are always first up but i use a few different foods and they prefer certain ones and the others prefer different ones so everyone gets a good meal. if they did ever start showing signs of aggresion to the others they'd be seperated immediately. at the moment they've got enough room for a while yet, but they'll eventually be in a massivbe heated tank with larger tropics to live out their warm, if alledgedly shortened, happy lil lives. goldfish ARE messy, but with good filteration this isn't a problem, food issues can be solved by variety, and even if heat does alledgedly shorten their lives by a couple of years i'd much rather have happy active healthy goldfish for that time than cold inactive constantly diseased goldfish in a cold tank. unless the breed was entirely intolerent to tropical temperatures i would ALWAYS have it in a heated tank if it was to be in a tank at all - ponds are a good alternative for outdoor fish but mine are pets not garden features :)

btw my tanks 78F most of the time ( i'd prefer 76 but it even maintains this temp with the heater off, god knows why) (no, i don't turn the heater off, it stays off itself if the temps over 76 it's hardly ever on!)

thats my 2p happy new year everyone :D

Goldfish are coldwater fish. Keeping them at tropical temperatures speeds up their metabolism, making them more active, grow faster and colourful. But more importantly it greatly shortens their life, makes them messier and ultimately even less suitable for tank life.
Unless you remove alot of the fish from that tank(guppys, tetras and corys) the goldfish will eat them. In fact its particularly important to remove the corys because of their spines, its not a pretty sight having a goldfish try to eat a cory, trust me.
And just how good is your filtration? In my mind,
ponds are a good alternative for outdoor fish but mine are pets not garden features
Thats your decision, but the goldfish would be MUCH happier in a pond in the longrun.
I'm keeping my tropicals at 73F at the moment lol, though i don't keep them that low all year round.

if bump the temp to 22*C you could have...
zebra danios
WCMM's
peppered corys
leopard danios
glowlight danios
there is also a species of whiptail but can't remember that one.
some varios killifish
weather loach(not tropical, better of in coldwater with a tank of at least 4'x1 1/2')
hoplo cats

i'm getting a 4ft sub trop with...
weather loaches
lake tebera rainbowfish
peppered corys
hoplo cat
danios

thanks i dont know if i will but them in together.i heard gold fish make alot of mess?????

thats them out the door then i love to keep my tanks clean

If you have the right filtration and a good sized tank then they arent as messy as any other fish.

The things is it'a bad fish keeping, and it annoy's people who know what their doing.

Never keep gold fish with tropicals unless your feeding an oscar ;)

Gold fish are bullies and will get most the food with out letting other fish get any as well as many other things said already.

Please Stop doing this!!!!!!

yah ur right iam not mixing them. they are very aggesive

i was waiting for someone to lay into me there lol always happens around here but hey there ya go. anyway the goldfish ARE messier than any other fish BUT the filter is good enough to clean their muck along with the others. they've never attempted to eat another fish, nor have they ever bullied them, in fact they ignore the others. anyway i'm off out now, happy new year to all members, families and fishes :D

Well i cant talk as ive done it myself.

A long time ago i did it with two commons and two balas and while i had them they all got on well together. Sadly i couldnt afford the upgrade they needed and had to sell them on.

Two years ago I did it with two small fancies and small tropical fish. The fancies just bumbled along and didnt give a rats behind about the tropicals in the tank. I did this for about 6 months before they got their new tank.

Mixing fish isnt for everyone and i understand why people dont like seeing it done.

There may not be many reasons why it shouldn't work, but there's no reason *to* do it either... If it's a good looking tank you want (with colourful tropicals mixed in with goldfish), you're in the wrong hobby- the requirements of the fish come above your personal preferences. If it's a temporary measure, fine- you can't always plan for things like broken equipment- but for lnog term, there's no reason why it should ever happen.
