hello, i am new at this whole fish thing. i just got a 10gallon tank for xmas. and so far the fish that i have in it are..
-4 Rosy Barbs{2 male,2female}
- gold Barb{pretty sure its a male}
- Platy
now i was wondering if these fish are ok to be together? because the gold barb keeps chasing or trying to nip at my platy. but the other barbs dont seem to be bothering the platy, or my Gold barb. only the gold barb does. so should i get like 1-3 more gold barbs? so the gold bard will leave my platty alone? because i know the Rosy Barbs are supossed to be in a school of 5 or more. and they dont seem to be bothering the platy. if anyone knows what i should do please tell me :nod: because it would be a big help. and i enjoy watching them, they are so pretty :D and i dont want them killing each other. so thanks =3

Although a 10gal is a bit small to get many more fish, you've actually diagnosed it correctly... yes... get 3 more gold barbs, and also get the Platy 3 more friends... Then you'll be at your limit, but do 33% water changes every week.

thank you so much :) and I know its a small tank, but im just kinda starting out, to see how it all goes. and I've been doing regular water changes to it every week. once again thanks for your advice. and hopfully that will help, geting more platys and gold barbs =D

My own experience with gold barbs has made me unwilling to add any more to my community tank. The 3 that I have can stay unless things get worse but there will be no more added. They are nasty nippy things in my tank, but so are many of the barb group.

Hi Oldman47

Which Gold barbs do you have,the small Barbus Sachsi that only grow to around 5/6cm or the much larger Barbus SEmifaschlatus (SP) that grown to about 10cm?

The reason I ask is that I was looking at stocking about 5 of the Barbus Sachsi as a very reliable LFS source told me these ones are not fin nippers and an internet site that I read that contains people's own experiences of various fish suggests the barbus sachsi are relatively peaceful.

If you have these and your experiences are bad then I may have to change my mind on them

Mine are about 8 cm long and are around a year in my tank. I do not really know what they are because I bought them just by liking their looks in a LFS. My community tank is basically about trying out fish that I know nothing about. With these guys I learned not to do it again. Here are pictures if that will help you know which I have.

Hmm they look like the ones.

What problems are you having and who are they doing it with,specific fish or everyone?

I'm only a newbie as you know from my cycling thread that you've been contributing to...but could it be because you only have 3 of them?

They have nipped at all the livebearers in the tank and will chase things like the angel, betta and rasboras. My tanks are usually quite peaceful so I don't put up with much in the way of nippy fish. There are many barbs that I find too nippy, especially tiger barbs, but I took a chance with these guys.
