Going On 7 Day Holliday The First Time

Hello everybody, I´m going on 7 day planned holliday it is the first time since I have the aquarium (i have 8 days before I leave) and unfortunately I´m going shortly afterafter my silver dollar crisis.... My original plan was to try the holliday food out for 7 days and see the reaction of the fish and problems arrising with it. I wasn´t able to try it out. Should I:
A) try it now before I go? (shortly after the silver dollar crisis)
B) ask our brother in law to come in to feed the fish while we r away?
(say ever third day)
Also should I change about 75% of water? Will I be able to do without the test kit to test the water before I go - 120euro is quite expensive - my plans was to bring the test kit back with me (I can imagine your answer - u probably think I´m totaly mad not doing that).
I do have the light timer now and will be leaving extra oxygen source on.
Are they gonna be ok without fish person supervision? Thanks a lot for your help.

Personally I would not use the holiday food they are notoriously unreliable
I would recommend you set a bowl up with the food so your brother in law all he has to do is tip the food in which will stop him from deciding how much to put in as people that do not keep fish usually put to much in. I would definatley do a 75% water change before going away do not worry about testing it.

You can also use those medicine boxes with a compartment for each day labelled Mon, Tue, Wed etc. Put the right amount of food in for each daily feed.

I can't see why you shouldn't just do your normal weekly routine - e.g. a quick gravel vac, water change (whatever volume you normally do - average amount is anything between 25-50%), ensure the filter is in top condition and output flow is good, and don't be tempted to throw extra pinches of food in before you leave LOL

I agree with the previous poster who said to measure out the daily amounts of food into little pots or containers/saucers etc so that the person coming in to feed them won't accidentally overfeed.

We are living on a small island now and we have no relatives here etc.. But I was advised by my lfs to put in much less then what they say in a brochure which comes with the vac.food container... Although some people on this forum hate them, I have used those solid vacation feeding blocks twice for up to weeks sucessfully with everything from cichoids to goldfish. All fish were alive and well when I got back. Some even had fry!

Healthy adult fish can go for two weeks without eating. I'd do the usual tank maintenance before leaving & not worry about it.
