Glofish???

Future is not looking so bright for GM pets after all. We can only hope...
I think that's just it. Till reading through all these posts and thinking on it, I hadn't really formed an opinion.

I support genetic engineering when it has some greater purpose such as in the medical profession. And if these fish were originally created to test for pollution and had some non-commercial value, then I can see that.

However, after thinking about it, I think it would be highly irresponsible of consumers to buy these fish. By doing so, you're saying, "Hey it's ok to create genetically engineered pets, so long as you don't physically stab them with a needle to dye them or something painful like that!" And when companies find there's a market for something... guess what happens.

I mean, to put it in perspective ... how would you feel about, say, a GloDog or GloCat? Say they could modify the embryo then reimplant it into the mother and she gives birth to a litter of dogs/cats that glow when they get excited (instead of wagging their tail or purring). Yeah that would be spectacular. :p I think a huge proportion of the population would be extremely against that ...

But ya know, "they're only fish". :p :(

Just my 2-cents. ;)
