Glofish???

They are NOTgoing to be $75. Any way they will be at PETCO my frend works there he told me!!
I know, but their about $12.50 a piece and a small school will set you back a cool $75.
Besides, if your friend works at Petco, I'm sure their going to be cheaper (Petco probably bought the ones "manufactured" in Taiwan  ).

If you want my opinion, read this quote from another thread.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

"I voted inhumane, not because the creation of the fish is cruel (but I'm sure the mom didn't like have genes injected into her) its what happens to the fish that is inhumane. The only people who buy glofish™ are usually people who know nothing about fish. and they will put their brand new glofish™ in it's new bowl and watch him gulp air and swim frantically for a couple days, then the fish dies and the person is disappointed.
But still I see many experienced aquarists attracted to these fish for whatever unfathomable reason.
If you want to buy you own new glofish™ fine, go ahead, just as long as the demand for them doesn't push any of the natural beauty's out of the tanks at my LFS. Just as long as you always remember what that ™ at the end of glofish™ stands for."

. They were already created for scientific reasons and were NEVER hurt so why not make them avablabe to all people.
Ha ha :kira: I missed this post the first time reading this! Do you seriously beleive these fish were tested on and were NOT harmed? :kira:

They were exposed to ultra low levles of polution (ones so low that our instraments have trouble reading them) and thousands if not millions of wild fish where exposed to the same. alsotey express the Red flourescent gene all the time not when exposed to polution (that was a different batch these where made to study development of vertibrates) and I'm drifting off again!

If you don't want to drop the 75 bucks for 6 Glofish at the highest price around you can buy one glofish and 5 regular zebras and they will happily school together (as you may recall the fish don't know there is any difference).

Just to clarify - both Petco and Petsmart will actually NOT be carrying Glofish. I just heard this on the news a few nights ago, and both chains said this was because they did not approve of the sales of genetically engineered pets. Here is some info from the ABC news site about the fish:

'But Jennifer Pflugfelder, a spokeswoman for Petsmart, the largest pet supply chain, said the chain would not carry it. She said this was not because the fish were transgenic. Rather, she said, although there have been news reports about glowing fish, “We just haven’t had any demand from our customers at all.” '

Very interesting....I was looking at the pathetic fish in one of my local Petcos yesterday and saw a tank containing bright orange parrotfish...are these not genetically engineered?

There not genetically engineered their Hybrids, two species that bred without having genes injected (although parrot fish still are dyed and have their spines kinked by man).

Anyone who visits the GloFi$h website should notice two things of interest.

Firstly, in their 'In the news' section, there is no mention of the two biggest news stories since these fish were first marketed, ie. The fact that they have been banned from the pet trade by the Californian regulators. The fact that the FDA have decided not to regulate them is mentioned twice. Hmmmm.
The announcement that Petco and Petsmart wont be offering them for sale is not worthy of mention either.

The other is more ominous, the main page has a 'stop press' headline that glofi$h will now be available before christmas. Apparently this is due to 'huge demand'. how strange considering the largest chain in the US says it has very little demand for them. It seems to me that they are trying to push the fish onto the market early to avoid any more bad publicity before the 'product' is even launched and, more likely, to flood the market before more states see sense and ban the fish.

Future is not looking so bright for GM pets after all. We can only hope...

just a question about theses glo fish would they live less of a time period because well they were dyed but i dunno mu thought on them is well they pro would be kinda prone to disease over other fish but mabe not 8)

They already have them here in Columbus, Ohio at the petsmart.. 9.99 a piece I think.. I didn't think they were that hot, then again I dont like the danios or any other "normal" looking fish :) I like more colors, finnage and spunk :) Now a glowing JD, or Oscar? oooo ooOOooOoO :)

The demandis tremendos even with out the big chains the big chains only wanted to stay out of the fire fight. and who can blame them. Although I will admit that the FDA news doesn't matter seeing as how they are niether food nor drug.

also the fish are not injected with dye or grown in vats there of.

P.S. ken if you do get those silver dollars would you rather i not get any glofish or buy just the one to eat?

Alright, heres the skinny. I went to a local pet store. They had perhaps 15 fish. Being a beginner, we got some. 3 DOLLARS!!! THATS IT!(a piece) They cost no more than any other fish. I personally dont see the big deal. They WERE altered. That means maybe a single litter(i dont no wut its called)of eggs were hurt and thats it. the rest are inbred and inbred until there r tons.

OK I just went to deathbydyeing.org CAN ANYONE SHOW ME THE GLOFISH IN THE FISH LIST!? THATS RIGHT! YOU CANT! Yes doing this to other fish is bad such as the oscars and glassfish. But GloFish are safe. They arent poked. If you bought one, its great(times like 100)grandmother's eggs might have been hurt. Some, not all, but some.

You gotta love how on the glofish website, it shows them a beutiful stunning pink, but then you see them in the news reports, and they looks like barely tinted zebra danios.

"Next year yellow and green glofish will also be avaliable."

I expecially hate this line

"Son you'll be able to mix glofish, with your goldfish" They obviously don't know that coldwater fish can't go with tropicals :grr:

I also found it funny how they said the gene was from a jellyfish, then a sea anemone, and then a coral, so which is it? :/
