Hello all,
early this year I got 9 juvenile Parambassis ranga. Given their smallness (about 2 cm total length), I decided to keep them in a small hatchery, to avoid my archers' attention. As well known with this species, they are quite picky with food, and so dar only live mosquito larvae really make them happy. I feed once a day a good some 15-20 larvae.

So far (4 months), they haven't grown a bit, and I'm worried if I'm not feeding enough, or rather the smallness of their temporary home prevents their growth. Or perhaps I'm just impatient.

Anyone with experience with their growth rate in captivity?

Thanks!

Mine grew to about 5 cm within a year. They were in a 180-litre aquarium under freshwater conditions (around 10 degrees dH, pH 7.5) and fed a variety of meaty foods including chopped shrimp.

There are multiple species in the family including some very small species. Few of them are easily told apart from the others. It may well be you have some of a smaller species.

Cheers, Neale

This is the best picture I could get so far of my Parambassis. I just can't distinguish which species it is. After reading what I found on the web, I would exclude lala, but I cannot really say between siamensis and ranga. Just trying to figure why they're stuck at the 2 cm they were when I bought them.

Keeping them in the breeding trap may be a contributor, as well as the small feedings of mosquito larvae. I would suggest setting up another smaller tank just for them and feed them more and a varied diet. Add live worms, brine shrimp and try some of the frozen foods.
Good luck.

Thanks reverend.
Today I lost another (the third in 5 months).

So far I tried to feed them:

- dried and live bloodworm
- live dafnia
- grinded pellets
- bits of frozen shrimp and mussels
- live mosquito larvae

Only the last is accepted, largely due to their hectic movements, clearly attracting the fishes' attention. Haven't tried artemia yet, will do.
