Today we have been feeding large ramshorn snails to Martha and watching in amazment as she effortlessly crushes them and then spits out the shell.

Here she is looking smug with a fragment of snail shell:

Martha's enthusiasm for crunchy things obviously got the better of her because as we sat watching the telly, having run out of snails for her, we heard this almighty CRACK.
Fearful that Martha's tank had fractured we rushed to her aid, only to find that she had bitten the end off the nice crunchy glass thermometer and was chewing on the glass fragments!

Thankfully, she spat all the glass out and seems unharmed, but we certainly aren't going to be replacing that thermometer!

Yes indeed, Martha was still chewing a fragment but spat it out when she found it didn't have a snail in it.

I vaccummed the entire area to remove the glass and the little ball bearings that act as weights immediately.

Glad to hear martha's fine.

we had a similiar problem at work, the giant gouramai we had in would grab hold of the thermometer pull it back and let it hit the glass to get our attention as the tank is next to the desk.

so after doing that for a while it smashed the the thermometer, neither of the fish in there were hurt, i scoped out all the surround gravel and chucked it seeing as i couldn't see any glass!

They are rubbish... better to go for an electrical one with a probe or just get a better quality glass one (we have solid glass ones at work which martha would probably find a lot harder to chew through... although im sure she would try!

I have to agree with BW here. Those stick on types are useless. For me they always read 2-3 degC lower than the glass thermometers.

Martha IS getting HUUUGEE!!! Such a beautiful fish

hehe she's awesome
glad she never got injured, but did any of the liquid(mercury i think) spill out into the tank?

If you look closely at the photo, you can see that the red bulb of indicator liquid (alcohol) is unbroken.

As this is a mercury free thermometer it wouldn't have been disastrous if it had broken, but I'm glad it didn't!
