I have a male blue ram and one tetra that have this issue. The tetra has actually had for a day or so before the ram got it.
It is a big white spot, looks like the flesh is rotting away almost. I am not sure what the problem could be.

75 gallon tank
about 30 community fish including 4 blue rams (2M,2F)that spawn like clock work.
ph is on the orange side, maybe high 6.8-7.2
I used a test strip and eveything seems ok.
Very light pink for nitrates
Ak was mid green
I did my last water change 2 days ago, only 10% and added 6 10ml caps of safecoat.
Temp runs around 80-81*f
not sure what else might be needed, but i am sure that I can answer almost any question and I have some video if needed.

The tetra looks like a bite or bad scrape but it's hard to tell because it is blured. Does he still have the
? Or is it getting better? The ram looks like fungus too me.

You need to check your ammonia and nitrItes those are the 2 main killers not ph or nitates.

So check thoes. A 10% change is not much at all and will not make a big change. How often do you do a water change? how much water do you take out.

Went home on lunch and did some testing.
Heres the skinny...
Nitrates - less than 20
Nitrites - less than .05
Hardness - between 120-150
AK - 80-120
PH - 6.8-7.2
Did the test tube test for ammonia - stayed yellow for the whole time. about 12 minutes waited... which means none were present.

Last water change was 20 gallons on sunday, 10 on wednesday.
Normally on 20 gallons on Sunday which is about 25% water change.
Temp is 81*F

Your Nitrites should be 0 ppm. I would do another water change. A larger one. I do weekly 50% water changes on my tank. But I also have a hose that hooks up to me sink so it's easy. The old bucket way makes water changes a lot harder.

Do you have a hospital tank? I would take the sick fish out. Use a 10 gal tank. Do daily 70% water changes or every other day. This should help him start to fight what ever it is off.

Is it fuzzy looking? If so it is most likely Fungus. Some good Fungus treatment should work a good cheap treatment is Jungles Fungus clean I think it is called. I would hospitalise him and treat for fungus doing daily water changes.

Does it look like is is clearing up at all? Beacause it almost looks like a nasty bite from another fish or he scraped him self bad on a rock. do you have any rough decor that could have caused this? My Red eye tetras were being crazy swimming like they were going to spawn and a few got hurt on some rocks. But it cleared up with in 2 days.

I say less than .05 due to I am using a test strip under slightly yellow lights. But at least it was not a darker shade of pink.
I only have a bucket and a 50% change is a huge pita. I usually do to just below my inlet for my canister filter, I think like 20-25 gallons total. I was told by the LFS that if I do huge water changes, it will mess with my bio filtration which could cause the spike in ammonia lvls.

I have already moved him to a new 5 gallon tank, and I have been using ethromyacin(sp) today is day 2 for that.
it looks like a nasty scrap from something or perhaps a bite. I have seem one of the blue rams hiding under this small rock formation I have for my shrimp. He may have done it there.
Thank you for the post back.

Doing large water changes does not do anything to your filter. Lots of people on here do very large water changes with no problems. Some discus owners do daily 50% or more for thier fish. So don't worry about that.

If it is a scrape it should heal on it's own with no need of mess just good clean water and good food. I dint treat my fish with anything if they are hurt because when i do the same thing for my self. Just keep it clean and it will be fine. Much like our own cuts.

Good luck.

You might want to look at your stocking an make some changes if fish are getting Hurt there might be a reason like being chased.

I hear what you are saying. The only thing I can think of that would chase him is another male that is a bit larger than he is. as I said there are 2 males and 2 females. I would be willing to be the bigger male is chasing the little one to get to his woman.

Yeah that could be it you might have to fine one of them a new home because it's only going to worst as they mature or start spawning. I had a male kill my other male and I did not have any females to fight over.

Good luck.
