I went around to my LFS yesterday and was just browsing the tanks when i saw a single female guppy in with some plecs and clown loaches....now doesn't sound too odd but this guppy was mahooosive!! atleast 4inches long..<-----------------------------------------> about that big and was looking quite sad wasnt swimming much and its body was curved (not bent).

Can they really get this big or was this a mutant hybrid gone wrong?

Female guppies can get rather large, not 4 inches though! the line that you have drawn on the screen looks around 2 inches and this would be possible.

These do get shipped out now and then, usually old brood stock.

Their never very healthy though.

It did look a bit limp and pale but it might have been put in that day and wasn't settled.

You can't go by the physical size on the monitor - that depends on the actual size of the monitor, and the screen resolution.

Some of my largest female guppies (which are also the oldest) get really huge especailly if they have grown up in either my 1000L pond or the old bath tub that doubles up as another pond. With age (and a lot of babies later) they do tend to get a drooping back. Personally I would never buy such an old huge female, only because she could drop dead any day. A shame really that a female that potentially has been a good breeder for the previous owners has been sold into a pet shop where the old girl could end up in any sort of new quaters. Where ever she does end up I hope it's with somebody who knows fish and gives her a lovely home for her remaining time.
