hello im tryinmg to find sutible fish for when my tank has cycled i have 3 danios and one cory atm in a 70l tank

im quite intrested by a blue ram and would quite like a suggestion for a smaller cichilld that will be ok it a community tank with it

my ph is 7.4 - 7.6

:good:

Hi There,
Well the german blue ram isn't exactly the biggest of cichlids so finding small can be hard. Any of the other rams like bolivian or gold would suit nicely.
perhaps keyhole cichlids would be compatible since they are pretty chilled out, although I am not sure your tank is big enough to house them.
Hope that helps.

rams arent especially good for new set ups why not try other dwarf cichlids IMO are nicer than rams liek cockatoo's or agassizi's are a lot nicer in my opinion and these would be fine in a 70l tank rather than keyholes who would say need at least 100litres and they will get on with the fish you already have

I'm pretty sure in this months or the month before's PFK it said some rams are ok , i'm not sure which ones but i think some are very sensitive some are more hardy.

bolivian rams are the hardier of the rams but still nto suitable for newly set up tanks my mate got some for his 125l and withing 2 weeks they were dead you cant go wrong with agassizi they are one of the hardiest dwarfs and i think are the nicest

Whilst Im not saying GBR's arent sensitive, they are (sometimes very), the 'they need a mature tank' doesnt necessarily mean you cant have them. The recommendation for mature tanks comes from, IMO, the need to ensure that the tank is fully cycled, absolutely no traces of ammonia or nitrIte and very low nitrAtes, as GBR's are sensitive to nitrAtes, the recommendation to keep them under 20ppm. They are no use to cycle a tank or suitable for a tank thats just at the end of its cycle. However, I really dont believe that leaving the tank for 6 months before adding them is necessary (again this is my opinion) just ensure that the tank wont go into a mini cycle by adding them (ie at the end of a fish in cycle).

This is based purely on my own experience with these fish, I got 3 GBR's and placed them into a tank that had just finished a fishless cycle (which took approx 4 wks), no problems at all, a few months later, I transferred them to another tank (larger) that again had just finished a fishless cycle - never had a problem with them, they thrived. Not only that my water is hard and my ph is 7.8, above the recommended ideal for these fish.

Of course, bolivian rams are hardier (so they say) but Im just saying this over cautious must be mature tank, is a little OTT, so long as the tank has been properly cycled I see/had no problems with them.
