My son wanted to get into the aquarium thing and found a lady who wanted to sell her 55 gallon aquarium, stand, filter, lights, hood and fish. All for just a $100. It had 8 fish. Two kinds of sharks, and some small Algea eaters, a tinfoil and 1 Red Belly Pacu. The Pacu is about 6 to 7 inches right now and starting to get aggressive. The lady didn't know what she was buying. I saw that these fish need a huge tank and would like to get rid of it before it hurts itself or others. I've checked with the zoo aquarium and some pet stores, so far no takers. I live in Indianapolis area. I'm looking for help or suggestions on what to do with it. Any help would be great.

Have you considered advertising it on here or craigslist? You're more likely to get a private keeper offering it a home than a shop. Most likely someone who already keeps them and has a nice big species only tank for it.

Hey thanks for the ideas. I'm new to this web site.. How do I post it on here? I have checked Craigslist to see if anybody is looking for fish but I haven't tried it yet.

On the main page if you scroll to the bottom there is a 'Classifieds section', just go onto the USA/Canada section, then livestock, then advertise :)

As for craigslist, personally I'm from the UK but I've glanced at it a few times just out of interest and I've seen people advertise fish on there. Hopefully if you advertise someone will reply who perhaps wasn't looking to add to their collection but would/can give the fish a good home.

Proper public aquariums are also a possibility but from what I know of these fish they're relatively abundant and actually often used as food... so if the aquarium already has some it might not be interested in adding to the collection.

Hey thanks. I will try both. I found the classifieds very easily thanks to you. My son (12 yrs old) is just loving his new aquarium and getting me back into it as well. Thanks again for the info.

No problems. I hope you find a good home for it, and I really wish all fish shops were at least forced to give basic info about eventual fish size... I doubt the original owner of the tank would have bought the fish if it'd had a label on the tank saying the fish would very rapidly grow to be 60-100cm (ish) in size.

Yes, agree with C101 - I've seen several posts here in our beginners section saying that the owner was able to pass along a difficult fish via craigslist when it was offered for free. It's definately another option from the usual ones.

Additionally, let me mention that there are quite a few of us here who now have kids and are getting back in to a hobby we had earlier when we were younger. I'm certainly in that category and can say that I've learned many new things here and feel I can speak for a bunch of us that feel we've taken our past understandings to new levels.

So have a look around at the various threads and think about whether you want to ask some of your own questions. It can be a very rewarding thing to do the family display tank on multiple levels of child and parent learning.

~~waterdrop~~ :)

Thanks for your input. I will look around this site. I've all ready read a ton and learned so much in such little time.

+1 on what WD said - amazing how things have changed in the level of end-user understanding in the hobby, and the free availability of good information from them. This forum made my 2nd foray into fish keeping (29 years later) so much easier.

Chrisofer - I'm glad your son is excited about the new tank! I bet you could find a taker for the fish on Craig's List.
