Hiya folks,

Okay, I am getting some more malawi's off loafybones and once they are in my tank the total stocking numbers in my 55 will be: -

4 Johannii
5 Red Zebra
4 Acei
4 Yellow Labs
2 Socolofi
1 Mpanga
3 Hap Venustus
2 Hap Obliquidens

I know that at some stage I am (very reluctantly :/ ) gonna have to say bye-bye to the haps but apart from them I think my tank will have a good balance.

What do y'all reckon??

steve

Minus the Haps is sounds good. Keep an extra eye on the behavior of the Acei for signs of stress, they're the most docile of the bunch in a pretty active tank. They're generally tough, but you never know.

I agree, a nicely balanced tank (without the haps :( ). Some Syno's would be good if the CL's have gone. :)

The CL's have gone  .

They are currently housed in my 30 gallon (don't panic everyone they are only a couple inches long at the moment!). A new tank is in the pipeline and, once sorted out, they will be transferred.

Is a shame really because they are so "happy" in the community tank. Full of life and always interacting with the other fish.

Thanks for the syno suggestion too Ferris but I have already got myself 3 Pim Pictus to take up the CLs' place. The missus liked the look of them when she saw them at the LFS and they are far more active than the synos IMO.

cheers

Cool, they are nice fish. I know what you mean about the CL's, i had the same problem a few years ago. :(

I have 5 1" and 2 6" hap in my 280 litre tank and the meanest fish is the lombardia
which is 2"

Yes the hap will out grow the tank but that could be in 2 years time

Why all the caution.

Please add pitures to your post so we can see what they look like

:fun: PS the hap index is only 1 which makes it easy to keep

Its not neccessarily caution, imagine taking those fish back to the LFS after 2 years! Thats a lot harder to do than after a couple of months and ultimately it is in the best interests of the fish. :/

;) whats the problem; you swap them for 4 or 5 smaller malawi; or sell them through the cape ads.

Or you invest in the 1000 L tank you always wanted.

I say enjoy them as long as you can.

The last resort when they reach 250mm is to have them for dinner.

After all they are part of the staple food in Africa.

The concern is often about haps against the mbuna, but I'm more concerned about the haps. It's lombardoi aggression that haps don't do as well with. Sometimes what works still isn't the best thing.

It can go either way, and either way it's not a good mix in the long run. The idea is to do what's best for the fish, not see how much stress our fish can live with.
