I know my lfs gets shipments on Tuesdays. I asked him to get me some more rainbow madagascar, and he said he would order a batch of them.

Anyway, in general, is it good to pick up fish the same day they arrive at the lfs, or better to give the fish a couple days to recover from shipping, then pick them up - to kind of spread out the stress a little more?

Nope - not a good idea at all. And any reputable shop would not sell fish on the same day as they receive them. My shop keeps them under observation for at least 3 days first.

Its best to wait at least 24hrs after they have arrived in the petshop before buying them as they could have been in transport for over 8hrs before they arrived, then transporting them to your tank after that can just be too stressful for some fish.

great, I'll do that. I will be in the area on Thursday, so I'll pick them up then, that will give them 2 days to recover a bit. I am then going to start cycling a 55 gallon in the next week or two, and that will be their final home. (going into my 29 gallon for a little while, but they should only be about 2" long now, so I don't anticipate problems)
