Do you ever see any vertical bars on them? seven to be precise, when the bands become dark see if the 4th and 5th band join at the base, if so they are Geophagus dicrozoster, if not then they are Geophagus abalios

My lone Geophagus abalios

Hurray, thats given me the ID I needed, look just like yours Davo :good:

No they have spots and stripes, spots near the body of the tail, going to stripes at the end of the tail, will try to get a clearer picture of the tail.

they do have dark vertical bars, normally when lights out or one chases the other, i don't know what you meen by join at the base?
you meen the 4th and 5th bars join the bars on the opposite side of the fish at the base or the 4th bar joins the 5th bar at the base?

will have to have a good look when i get back home!
they do look extremely similar to the one in your picture though.

the 4th and 5th bar join to make like a V shape, as in this pic.
Dicrozoster

These and the G.abalios are by far the most commonly seen

if you look at my pictures, they don't have any spots at all, just stripes all the way to the base of the tail.
i just looked at the fish as the lights off again now, all i can see is 5 really thick dark vertical bars, extending from the back/dorsal edge of the body to the belly, the 1st is right behind the gill, the 2nd goes right through where the spot is, the 3rd in the middle of the 2nd and the tail, the 3rd is at the start of where the body goes thinner as it gets to the tail and the 5th is right on the thin bit of the body immediately before the tail, there is definitely only 5 as described and they are each 15-20mm wide. would that help?

id like to know what ive got aswell lol. mine was sold just as a geo and nothing else. it has a black spot and a line down the eyes. at the start of its top fin it is black aswell. any ideas? sorry for hijack

I might get yelled at for doing this. But on MFK there are some hardcore geo keepers that really know their stuff. I would post these photos there and see what they say. Not saying that people here don't know. it's just there are some geo freaks on that site that could help.

But yours do look a lot like minxys.

na minxys have spotted tails mine have stripey tails, no doubt they are all closely related and just different variants but its just nice to know exactly what you have isn't it.
