datnoids FTW!!! if you can get your hands on some, that would be my choice.
also, with datnoids you have different routes you can go with tankmates.

You should probably listen to beblondie, she's got vast experiance in this sort of area ie: polypterus, lungfish. I've had poly's in with a common pleco and i noticed a little harrasment once it reached 12" but the bichirs became far more active, adventurous and feed more once the pleco was gone.
