Is it a done thing to let nature take its route and let the fry just stay in the main tank with the other fish?

Just wanna know if thats classed as cruelty or not?

As i think ive got a few pregnant platties!

;) Leaving the fry in the main is a natural thing, but I tend to rescue as many fry as I can find. None of my fry ever survive in the main tank, but maybe it's because the tank doesn't enough hiding places for them. I just released one of my older guppy fry into my larger tank after 4 months of rasing! :D

Guess it really depends on you. Sometimes you can't avoid killing them when you all of sudden noticed there's fry in your tank and didn't know about it. For the first couple of batches of fry i tried saving the majority of them cause I thought it was sad to let them get eaten. But now that I have over 200 of the babies I decided I'll let the next fry fend for themselves( I'll give them some shelter so they atleast have a chance). Then the next day I noticed not one fry had been eaten! Either the adult fish got full or they knew that i didn't want to save them anymore :grr: So now I have fry swimming around with the adults and my population isn't going down :-( But to tell you the truth I'm glad I saved some cus I now have adult fry with amazing colours! Colours I would never see in a lfs, here's what some look like:

Guess you'll have to make the decision up for yourself.

ill probably let nature decide, got loads of plants, grass pad things etc in the tank.

Just wanted to make sure its not frowned upon

hey snowy, are some of those guppies the common type, or females just dont get much color? i too did the same and saved the first few batches of my livebearers but now im running out of space. hopefully if my mom decides to build a pond i can release a bunch of them

there must be a problem, i cant see what i posted unless i post again x.x

I don't classify it as cruel, just nature taking its course. I've given the fry some breeding grass (plastic) to hide in, and with each batch, more fry are surviving. In fact, I've got 6 tiny ones (only 2-3 weeks old) that are spending a lot of time out of the grass, and they all come out at feeding time.

I've had to buy more tanks to accomodate the growing population!

How big is your tank, and who else is living in there?

its 48" x 18" x 12" (about 37.5 uk gallons/45us gallons)

It has 2 young angels & 10 platties.

Soon willl also have 3 clown loach (again, will be small young ones).

MY TANK

Very nice tank! I'm guessing that the angels would enjoy snacking on fry, but I'm not experienced with angels. You do seem to have some good cover for the fry, and with 10 platties (!), I'm sure you'll see fry at some point. (Maybe even more that you expected!)

Good luck! :)

I kind of think its cruel from the sense that fry dont have the same chance as their wild cousins. Why? well like with the guppy the mom has her hunger supressed for around 12-24 hours. In the wild this gives the fry chance to get away and/or head into plant growth so dense only they can get there..... now getting away or hiding in super dense plant growth is no an option in a tank.

However so long as your fry have plenty of places to hide then fair enough. Peeps seem to recommend java grass etc as ideal for fry to hide in..... and hide they do, very well.

i recon ur tank will be fine to let nature take its corse since u got some plants and some hifding spaces
