Fry Tank

I am considering getting a fry tank. Currently I have about 20 Guppy fry in my main tank and as they grow this will obviously put some pressure on the tank before they are large enough to move on.

I was thinking of putting them in a fry tank and then rehome them from there when they are big enough. As the next brood come through, they will also go in this tank. So, I have two questions:

1. What size is a sensible size to use for this?
2. At what age will the fry likely to be large enough to sell/give away?

i think that would be fine. imo i wouldn't but anymore than 20 in but you will rehome them. you could give them away after about 3-5 months imo. they are stronger at that point.

It depends on what you want to do with them. If you wish to sell them then you would really need to be keeping them for 3+ months IMHO.
If your giving them away then you can give them away at any age, I would be careful of who you give them to though as I know some people on various internet sites who will take fry but feed them to their bigger fish.
As for the tank, I would suggest as large a tank as possible, this means your able to do more with it. Plus if you decided to stop breeding guppies then you can move onto different fish rather than just have a small fry tank.

Bigger the better really, they do all their growing when they're young so lots of space is ideal. Id probably be looking at about a 20 gallon at least. A basic clearseal tank would do the job.

A basic clear plastic storage box is just has good,if funds are limited i raised hundreds of guppy/platy fry in a storage box,80 litres i think,bought a cheap heater & filter added mature media and away it went for nearly a year until i decided to give up rearing livebearers

i may just give that a try when my platies pop. YOu could probably keep them grown up in tere untill they get sold off as well!

I remember when I kept/bred goldies and had half a dozen storage tubs full of fry in my bedroom at once, each driven by a bubbling air filter - the room sounded like some kind of chemistry lab and was a bit irritating at night but storage tubs are indeed life savers sometimes!

If so, I take it no one has had any problems with the plastic buckling under the weight of the water? Also, they don't leach any chemicals or anything like that into the water? I guess the fry won't be in there long enough for that to be a problem?

Thats expensive ekkk but yes that what your looking for

Never has any bother but they do stink when get them, i wash mine out with hot water, paper towels and leave to air in the garden for a day or so
