Fry Log - Birth To ?

It doesn't always happen, but with your stocking it would be more likely. It's also hard to say what happens, because Platies usually give birth when we aren't there (stinkers :p ) so you don't know what triggered them. Males probably couldn't eat all the fry, so some just might be born a little small.

I was pretty lucky on Saturday I got to witness mine being born..... a couple took ages and were just hanging out and others well god knows where they came from as must of happened when I blinked lol as they kept multiplying even though i never took eyes off them

Awwww, that's great! Mine are very good at giving birth when I'm not there. For example, I checked on a pregnant Platy, took a shower, and came back and she'd had 7 fry.

Thats a bit similar to how mine happened but I just kept watching her and eventually managed to see a few born it took her approx 3hours if not longer to deliver them all but it works out at approx ten an hour and I know I wouldnt like to ever have to go through that sort of experience yet lol...

I'll try and get some pics taken soon and post them on the site!

Just wanted to update - the fry log might get a couple weeks behind because I will not be home. Just found out my uncle has cancer, so I'm going to stay with him. It'll be 2 weeks tops though, so it won't be too bad.

 I'm really sorry about your uncle. I'm sure it's definately not a big deal if you don't get those pictures, no one will hate you for it. And if anyone does, I'll be sure to take care of them :D

Hope you uncle gets better, I really do hope so :(

 Thanks for the offer IovaykInD. No unnecessary violence while I'm gone though. :p

Thanks for the wishes. I'm pretty sure he'll be okay, because they caught it early and he has lots of options. They just need more blood tests and such. It's hard though, because my best friend's grandmother is dying (Literally...2 weeks left to live max) of leukemia and I know her too, so I'm kind of back and forth between the two places. Depressing month. :(

:-( So sorry to hear about your uncle and friends grandmother! Don't really know what else to say really! (I'm no good at that sort of thin)

I hope things get better for you! Look forward to seeing your pics! I still have two alive in my community

Thanks.

Awww, glad to hear you have some alive! They're really good at hiding, aren't they?

I think you might be overfeeding a bit, especially if the tank is getting dirty fast. I'd cut down to maybe one pinch of fry food and however many flakes your fish can eat in a few minutes.

You are aware Chinese Algae Eaters will become aggressive and can kill fish, right?

By the way, Kmackenzie, I sincerely apologize for hi-jacking your thread. I just felt I should reply. Congratulations on the babies, and I'm so glad to hear your "curse" is broken! Hope things continue to get better for you.
Hi Annastasia sorry about this i thought it best to post over here beacuse i think i was hi-jacking Kmackenzie thread also.

Firstly i just like to say how sorry i was to read of your your Uncle and friends grandmother our hopes and prayes go with them.

I Have cut down on the feeding of the fry hopefuly this will stop it getting messy, The Chinese Algae eaters have been alright up to now ones 1 1/2" the others 2", its another case of the pet shop not tell you the truth about them, mine said they would be perfect in a community tank  it only since ive joined the forum that i realise the danger, but i must say they have been ok so far, i will keep a close eye on them. many thanks Ivor

Thanks Ivan, much appreciated. :)

Good to hear. I'd keep up with the water changes withe the fry, since they are a bit more sensitive then adult fish. Once a week, I'd say, 25-50%.

The older and bigger they get, the more aggressive they'll be. I'd keep a VERY close eye on them. Also, read the topic 'CAE and Platies'....that should tell you a bit more. Good luck!

Well I think both fry in community are gone! :-( Its my own fault for taking nearly everything out when I had to try and get my chinese algae eaters out! Oh well I might be wrong only time will tell!

Then again only about a week or two until my two moms give birth again! :D

When I took back the CAE to the pet shop the guy said that he had never heard of them being agressive towards the smaller fish he says he's kept them most of his life and not had problems! Oh well got two baby plecs in stead! Will see how they get on told they will only grow to 4 inches but doubt it very much!

Hope you are well and that everyone is ok!

Oh by the way I can now tell the difference between the fry in my nursery tank the older ones are now slightly bigger but not much! Don't seem to be growing too fast though but I'm not worried I'd rather them grow slow than too fast (less chance of complications in my opinion)

Awww, sorry to hear. :( I hope you are wrong though. They are very good at hiding, maybe they'll pop up and surprise you one day.

What kind of Plecos? Some will stay pretty small, but if you got Commons...you can expect 12" or bigger.

How often are you feeding, and what? Some are naturally slow growers, but it won't hurt them at all to be growing fast.

Only time will tell if they are still alive in there they could just have stayed in the bit of fake christmas tree that they were hiding in but it got moved here there and everywhere during the capture of the CAE's!

No idea what type of plec they are at the mo..... The shop assistant seemed to be in a hurry to get rid of me!

I feed the fry freeze dried tubifex, ground flake, small baby daphnia! They get fed at least three times a day! It's quite interesting watching them with the daphnia..... I occassionaly give them some liquifry but that isnt often now! They are very cheeky seem to be very good at hiding in the nursery! When I look in I'll only see one or two but as soon as the food comes out they seem to swarm at the top!
