A friend of mine who admires my betta decided to buy her own... she bought a pretty turquoise colored fish who clearly has ick and put him in a jar so small he can barely turn around. I told her she needed a bigger bowl, and that she should change her water every day until she gets a new one, and told her where to get a bowl and medicine within walking distance of our college. She said it's rediculous to spend money on a three dollar fish. ~_~ She's had it for three days, and the water is all cloudy and his fins are clamped together, and he won't eat... she still won't listen to me.

Grrr... maybe I should buy a larger bowl and give her my one gallon bowl. Although I have a feeling she wouldn't use it because she'd have to use more dechlorinating stuff and that would cost more money.

*sigh*

Give your friend access to this forum quick we will sort them out!

Gotta love the hardheaded ones!!
And what is up with that comment??? Too much money to spend on a 3 dollar fish? WTH?
You would never hear someone say that about a dog or a cat they got for free. "What?? spend all that money on a dog/cat I got for free?? Pffffttt! Never!".... yeah right.....

People just won't get out of that 'it's just a fish' mindset.

Even if she did use a gallon bowl.. she probably still would never clean it enough to keep the betta healthy. You should get on her case until she either takes better care of him or you take him.

I agree with Amunet, either try and teach her or take the Betta off her.
Annoys the hell out of me when someone buys a living creature but refuses to spend money on it, it's totally irresponsible!

I wish I knew how to tell her I want to confiscate her fish and give it a better life! Last year I was her roommate and she had another betta in an even smaller bowl (I didn't know enough about bettas then to know it was bad), she let the water grow all brown and green, and I'd clean the bowl for her and change the water, she'd yell at me for touching her belongings. It ended up dying because when she brought him home for the summer she put his bowl on the floor of her car, and he spilled out and couldn't breathe for the rest of the car trip! ~_~ Poor little guy...

I would tell her that you will pay her $4. to buy it back! :good:

And tell her it is her responsibility to take care of a "3 dollar fish." rrr

Ugh that makes me totally  You should definatly offer to buy him off of her, and do tell her about this site, maybe meeting some real betta lovers would straighten her out... so sad

that puts me in a bad mood :grr: .....she shouldn't buy something she doesn't care about nor wants to take care of. you should try to confiscate it or buy it from her because the poor thing is gonna die.

She obviously didn't know what she was getting into. You should buy her a pet rock instead and trade for the poor Betta. She'd probably be happier with it anyway.
I just can't believe some people.

Then again, I have a similar situation with my sister. I didn't even know she OWNED a betta until I showed her my new guy. Apparently she's keeping hers in a vase, with a plant and... nothing else. I haven't seen him yet, but I have a plan to put on the waterworks when I get a sight of him if he's doing poorly. Maybe then she'll listen to me!

I bought my friend a bigger bowl, some dechorination stuff and stress coat, some hikari betta bio gold, a silk plant and some aquari-sol. I'm hoping she uses the stuff, I got her enough to last a while... now I'll hopefully just have to badger her about cleaning the bowl more often.

That was really sweet of you. I hope she uses it too. Maybe tell her that if she feeds & cares for her betta that he'll become even more beautifully colored and vibrant. Maybe that'll give her some incentive.
