What brand frozen bloodworms do you guys buy?

The quality of the blister packs I buy varies all the time. What's the best one to get?

My lfs carries Hikari bloodworms. The quality is fine.

One of the things that effects the quality of any frozen food (for fish or for humans) is the way it is handled and stored. Be sure you take them home and get them right into the freezer after you buy them and don't let them defrost. If you doubt that your lfs is careful about this kind of thing, you might want to buy them somewhere else to avoid any potential problems. :)

I use Hikari as well. Seems to be the only brand the fish store carries for frozen foods.

Hikari has good quality and the larvae are bright red. I've been told that if they are brown its likely that the pack has been defrosted or partially defrosted at some point. I don't see this with Hikari but I don't know if they add something to keep it red.

The one thing I don't like about Hikari is that there tends to be less food per bubble than other brands I've tried, and the larvae are smaller. Just today someone (on another forum..shh!) was saying that he thinks they put more water in it. He was saying its a better idea to get the flat packs because of this and the fact that they are less likely to defrost. Check around the edges of the pack to see if they are brown, and don't buy if they are, he says. Sounded like good advice to me.

Thanks guys :good:

I heard that Hikari is good but don't see them in my LFS so I bought a couple of blister packs of Hikari on eBay but obviously they don't get here frozen :/ a bit disappointing :( Do you think it's still usable once completely defrosted?

The one I've been getting is called Dutch Select Food. It's not bad in general and usually quite clean but sometimes you get huge worms that my fish can't swallow.

iSnail,

They don't stay good very long once defrosted. One time I defrosted too much and left the extras in the fridge overnight to feed the next day but that's as long as I would stretch it.

Why would someone sell a frozen item on ebay? That doesn't make any sense. Like trying to sell frozen peas or something. Time to clean out the freezer, put it all up on e-bay, honey!

If I were you, I wouldn't use those defrosted bloodworms for more than a day or two, sorry to say. I have no experience with bad bloodworms making my fish sick but that's because I'm paranoid about spoiled food! Buy whatever brand your pet store has. Its got to be better than old hikari.
