Hey guys,

Tomorrow I will be putting my plecs and corys in there new 110g home :good:

I currently have them in a 55g which is filtered by a Fluval 305 canister. Please could you tell me if it is ok to simply take all of the media (4x pre filter sponges and 6x trays of biomax) and put them in the sump of the 110g?

I was under the impression it would be as the bioload will not change, but a member of staff at my LFS said it would not due to "more water volume"?!? The 55g will be stripped down to sell after this so I do not have to worry about seeding etc. and if possible I would like to avoid running both the canister and sump together as I will sttuggle to fit the canister to the tank appropriately for a long period of time.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,

Simon

I would think that it would be ok. More water would dilute the amount of ammonia in the water that is produced by the fish and might not be enough to feed the amount of bacteria in the old media. But I believe that if you watch your levels closely and do partial water changes appropriately, the bacteria would balance itself out.

This is all just my opinion based on my experience with aquariums. Hopefully an expert will come along and give some input.

If your current media is supporting your present fish load, it will continue to do so. It will only be enough biofilter for the fish that you already have so don't go fully stocking the new tank. With that said, I have never used a sump and have no idea how the transferred media would best be arranged in the sump.
