Hi everyone.

I've grown more and more addicted to fish keeping since I bought my first tank a year ago. It was a 100L tank. But that soon wasn't enough any more, so here I am, with a new 400L tank. Now, here comes the question of questions:

I have used an internal sponge filter (Fluval U3) for the old tank and have the Tetra EX 1200 external filter for the new tank. I am not planning on adding any new fish for now, just transferring the ones I have from old to new tank. So, could I use as much of my old water as possible and add the sponge to my new filter and add the fish right away? I don't want to mess around and risk my fish, so I have also bought some ammonia as I originally planned on doing a fishless cycle and keep my babies in the other tank for the time being. What would you suggest? What is best/safest? Everything in this new tank is new (gravel&sand, rock, plants, substrate, wood) nothing has been taken over from the old tank. The only thing I did was that I added some new sponge to my established tank a few weeks back (wedged behind my filter) so it could start growing beneficial bacteria- at least I thought that this might help, so I could add it to the new filter to help the fishless cycling process...

I don't know.... What do you guys think is right and what I should do?

Thanks for your help in advance,

best way is obviously to cycle fist as then there is no chance of any fish dying cause the tank was not cycled propery our you could put the u3 in the 400l tank alongside the external for a few months an then take it out.

No, if you're just moving the fish you have now, then as long as you move all their filter media with them, you'll be fine, though do feed sparingly and test often for the first few days to make sure the bacteria are working properly.

The filter you have now is coping with the bioload of your current fish; they won't care what tank or filter they're in.
