Hi

I went to the pet shop today for more fish and ended up getting a frog
The person at the shop said it stays the size it is which is about 2cm at the moment, is this right?
I have looked into getting a frog for a while but have never came across any that stay so small. At the pet shop it was just called tropical frog :S it is a nearly black colour and does like to hide alot, does anyone have any idea what species it could be? I will try get a photo if i can without distubing it too much.

If it has webbed front claws its an African dwarf frog and wont get more than an inch and they are very passive. If it has claws with no webbing on the front claws its an African clawed frog and could get up to 6 inches and will eat other fish in your tank. I learned this lesson a while ago. Most pets stores don't know the difference.

If it is a dwarf frog (which hopefully it is), and you intend to keep it with other fish, you will probably have to hand feed it as it cannot compete with most fish for food. ADFs (African Dwarf Frogs) are very slow to find food, and you often see them starving in pet stores when kept with other fish. I used to breed ADFs, they are entertaining little critters.

Take a look at the invertebrate amphibians and aquatic reptile section near the bottom of the forum. There's lots of info on frogs there.

does it have little claws on it's back feet?
if so, he may well be an african clawed frog ... and you'd want to separate him from any fish in your tank!
I got one of these, called Splashy a few years ago, and he was tiny and cute ... then he grew and ate my fish! :p
Be careful :p
