Friend Is Re-Starting A 40 Gallon Tank - Stocking Ideas?

So my friend is restarting his 40 gallon tank and he's looking for stocking ideas.  He loves rams and is planning to keep a pair of Germans.  Beyond that, he's looking for suitable tankmates that would go well.  I know he's leaning towards a school of medium to large sized tetras.  Anyone have suggestions?
