It is sometimes referred to as whirling disease, or mad discus disease. I prefer the latter, because the term "whirling disease" has traditionally been associated with a cold water (salmonid) parasite. The disease you have been reading about among discus keepers is almost certainly a genetic disorder that has been exacerbated by excessive line breeding. That is the disorder I was referring to.

That's what I had assumed but then a fancier and a vendor both recently reported 'fatal whirling' from wild Rio Nanay Red-Spotted Greens.

What I said does not imply the condition doesn't occur in the wild. In fact, it implies the opposite.
