Just about to start OFFICIALLY cycling my first proper tank in the PROPER way!!

Found the ammonia - have ammonia test kit (and all the others)...Here goes nothing!!
Excited - moi???? :hyper: :hyper:

It'll be Homebase Essentials. It's what I used.

Oh yes Homebase essentials - 9.5%.
It is in the tank - will test in 3 days????

Yup, sounds about right :) Good luck! I found all of the testing really fun hehe

Ah thanks AlmostAwesome - hope it doesn't take too many weeks but not worried about be impatient. Just hope I manage to do it right

I'm sure you'll do fine! I think the average is 6 weeks sometimes it's longer and it can be a little less too :)

Ok so I think everything is going to plan. Have seen the tank this morning and I have a splendid bacterial bloom!!

So I will just sit tight and wait to re-test.

Twiddling my thumbs now

Go to you local Aquatics shop and ask them for some used filter media, that should knock a good few weeks off the cycle. I went to Maidenhead Aquatics and they were happy to give me a bag full.

The giddy excitement is inspiring.
A ton of tedious work ahead.
But with your entrance I would say you want this to be a stellar experience, Fish-less is a great choice and should reward you with great results.
Some of my fish make me giggle, others are just plain awe inspiring.

Great to see a new bio taking form.

Ah thanks everyone - I am very excited. Boring my husband silly!!

I am off to Maidenhead aquatics today in Peterborough - I shall ask!!! I have no idea what to do with it so will post when I get home to ask advice. I am being quite a high maintenance member of the forum at the moment

Mauigirl - I have a small fluval edge and did a fish in cycle years ago but I only have two platy's and a couple of fry. Looking to actually do it properly and reward my lovely fish with a proper tank and a happier life. I have not been a good fish keeper and now I mean to make amends.

Ahh.. you are then and will still be splendid. I can just tell from your excitement :fun: :hyper:
It is such a joy to sit back and watch happy healthy fish.

I looked at the edge and decided to wait for them to turn on craigslist, perfect to grow plants I would think.

Well disappointed isn't the word!!

I went to MaidenHead Aquatics in Peterborough. The tanks were beautiful, the aquascape was out of this world. I approached a member of staff and asked for some used filter media as I was just ctarting to cycle my new tank. She was aghast - said that they do not reccommend doing that and said that I needed to add the bacteria, wait a week and introduce the fish. I explained I was Fish-less cycling and she said that they never reccommend that as I will poisen the fish as there will be residual ammonia in the water blah blah. Obviously I explained that I will be testing for 0 ammonia before fish go in but she just said that they do not recommend it and to never use ammonia

Of course I will continue with the fish less cycling..............I will NOT be defeated. Am off to Maidenhead Aquatics in Cambridge tomorrow. God where do they find these staff?????

ahhh bummer, what can ya do? Good job for sticking to your guns though :)
