Found A Bargain Tank For My New Boy!

just a quick question, do you put heaters in there? if not how you keep the temp stabablized.. especialy in this bloody country that cant make its mind up wether to be summer or not

only asking as i was about to get my first betta when i had to use the new tank for a goldfish who was being bullied and now i need a new tank... i know i could put the goldfish in the new tank as its coldwater but i have a feeling that 1 betta is never gonna be enough and cheap tanks will be needed

some of mine have heaters, and some dont. I try to put 3 tanks in a row and the one in the middle dont have heaters. Saying that I have them turned so low at the moment they neednt be on.

A goldfish in an 11L tank? Wow... you should head over to the coldwater section of the board for some advice on goldfish keeping. That is only about 3 gallons, and a fancy goldfish shouldn't be kept in less than 20g if you want it to survive its full lifespan (potentially over 20 years). That, and "a" goldfish isn't a great idea either; they are a social species and should at least be kept in pairs.

sounds just like a hospital tank to me. or if isnt i think you should get it taken to the lfs. you never know they may even give you store credit for the goldie and you can get a betta with it

this is what annoys me about this forum...people jump to conclusions without all the facts. The goldfish is a fancy one and he is ill, got cauli disease, no cure for it.. I have had him about 2 years he has to be by himself as he has a contagious disease. His tank might not be the biggest one but it is cleaned out every 10 days and it has an excellent filter in it. His quality of life is the best I can do for him under the circumstances.

I'm not bothering you because the tank is "not the biggest," because forgetting about space for behavioral enrichment alltogether, it is too small to maintain a healthy environment for the species just in terms of water quality. If he is sick, being in such a tiny tank will only hinder his health further, as the high ammonia levels can make him even more ill. I'm glad you have a strong filter, but every 10 days is an awfully long time to go without cleaning in a tank so incredibly small; goldfish produce a huge amount of ammonia, and I'd imagine it's pretty high at the end of 10 days, even if it is cycled (I'm guessing not since it is fully cleaned out every 10 days). Sorry if you feel that giving you correct advice on properly caring for a goldfish who is apparently allready disabled counts as "jumping to conclusion," but I'm more concerned about the fish's health than if the correct advise is offensive or not.

And honestly, there's no need to be pissy at someone for giving you advice that could save or prolong your pet's life; in fact, most people would be greatful for something like that. But at any rate, I've hijacked this thread for too long; "thanks" to the origional poster for the tip about nice inexpensive tanks at Wilkonsons; I wish we had places with prices that reasonable around here
