how many litres/gallons is your tank? and how long did it tank for your tank to cycle using household ammonia?

My tank is 180Litres and was about a month to cycle.

Having read the numerous threads on here, the average seems to be about a month - as I understand it, tank capacity is not a major factor, as you dose the tank to a certain concentration (4ppm in stage 1, 2-3ppm in stage 2), so the bigger your tank, the more ammonia you introduce.

Luck also seems to be a major factor - sometimes things just go wrong, sometimes things just go right.

My fishless cycle lasted 10 days - but then I used mature media from my existing tank.

From what I have observed, most are 4-6 weeks including qualifying week, although a few do last for 12 or more weeks.

Volume of water should not make any more than a week of difference, but seeding does make a LOT of difference!

I very much do have mature media available.. between all my filters, I have about 10-15 kg of the stuff. The whole point of the log is that it is a project with all the details recorded, and with realistic expectations, problems, etc, on how I set up and run an aquarium. I am trying to be as honest as I possibly can about everything, even if I am to have any problems with it. I even went as far as using only new equipment. The project will run for at least a year from the first post, I think, and maybe even longer. I hope to cover fish-less cycles, setting up, all the other usual things like that, building a stand, introducing fish, maintenance, picking stock, plants, upgrading filter, treating diseases, replacing lights, and maybe even moving house. I hope to be able to keep daily photos of the set-up as it develops, but I think weekly is more likely.

You do have a very valid point actually.. I have been able to always seed all of my new filters, so this is actually the first fish-less cycle I have ever done for myself. I have overseen plenty of others before, of course, but that's quite a different experience, I think.

My only hope is that *someone*, *somewhere*, at *some point* may benefit from it.
