Does anyone know what causes foam to form at the top of your tank? There's been foam there for a couple weeks now and it seems not to being any harm, but I still don't know why it is there. Anyone know what may be causing this? Thank you.

Foam in a fish tank can be caused by a couple of reasons:

1 - The water has excess amounts of waste. The bigger the fish the more waste is created. Do a partial water change no larger than 30%. If you still see foam, wait another day or so for the parameters to level out, and then perform another partial water change.

2 - Excess amounts of water de-chlorinator or conditioner. Partial change of 30% should do the trick - ensuring you follow instructions on the de-chlorinator bottle. If problem still persists, change brands

Ok cool I did what you said. It seems to have helped there's plenty less foam. A little remains...but not a large amount by any means. I'm still confused why that would come though...I have 4 good sized red belly piranhas in a 20 gallon tank just temporarily because someone was going to get rid of them so I took them off his hands. obviously they're crowded in there but the water tests are better than that of the 55 gallon with 1 electric blue dempsey and 1 green terror that are each only about an inch big...the piranhas all together add up to about 20 inches...these fish are starting to throw me for a loop! Thanks again.

i would suggest, the problem is, too smaller tank and too small of a filter. you will need large water changes till you get them in the bigger tank. even so, imo, 55g is too small for 4 red bellies. and i would, also, suggest, keeping them on their own. if you don't, they will be, believe me.

Alright I may not have explained it well I'm sorry.

In my 55 gallon aquarium (the one with the foam issue) I have 1 electric blue dempsey and 1 green terror. Each one is an inch big. I also have a new eheim 2215 canister filter. I was told that would be more than adequate for a 55 gallon tank...yet there's foam at the top.

The piranhas I had mentioned are in a 20 gallon tank...so why would that tank be perfect with it being overcrowded...and the 55 not be perfect with only 2 small fish in it?? That is throwing me for a loop!

yeah, sorry. got that wrong. even so a 2215 is only good for tanks up to 30 gallons. so i would still suggest that the filtration is far too low. i would suggest (from Eheim) a minimum of a pro 2 2028. and, to me, thats still too low.

Agree with the dinosaur. I ran the numbers and he's right on the money. An Eheim Pro II 2028 would be perfect sized for that tank.

Here are the numbers:
TFF turnover recommendation for community tanks is 5x (planted tanks are often 10x.)
55 US gallons x 5 turnovers per hour = 275g/h = 1041 L/H. [Eheim 2028 runs 1050 L/H)
Eheim 2215 is 620 L/H = 164 G/H = 33g tank at 5x turnover
It may be that the missing piece of info for you was that its important to dig for the specification called the flow rate. Each manufacturer will generally not advertise this number very openly but will have their marketing guys give a "recommended for X size tank" that they print. The turnover rate does vary among experienced aquarists not only by preference by by goal. Some go as low as 4x, while, as I mentioned, many of the planted tanks run 10x and even above.

Yeah, we usually celebrate here when we catch our fellow newcomers before they've put fish in the tank so we can recommend a fishless cycle, but in truth, that skips over the whole sometimes lengthy thing of seeing if their filter is properly sized to the tank and goals of the tank and then whether it has the best mix of media. Its just almost impossible for any newcomer to the hobby to have the patience to go through all that long stuff and so virtually all of us just end up learning it by trial and error over the years I'm afraid, but yeah, it sure is frustrating when you've made a significant decision and later you wish you'd had more info to think about.

One good thing about your situation is that there are significant advantages to having two filters, if you can successfully fit them to the tank. A 55g at least has significant room for things to hang over the sides, although making your top accomodate it all can be challanging. With two filters you can alternate cleanings on different weekends and know that even if a cleaning caused some trouble with some of the bacteria could at most have an impact on only about half the bacteria. Likewise, a hardware failure is going to be much less of a disaster on a tank with two filters!

I know none of this may offset the impact to your wallet! But another possibility is that you could get to try one of the Pro or Pro II models and have it in a personal head to head comparison with your Classic series one. This would put you in a position to give us some good insights about maintenance between the two types and other comparisons. Also, for yourself that would help you in future filter decisions.
