i have had fish tanks for almost 16 years. I have never had a fish jump out of tank. After going through a divorce my reef tank is at my parents while I am settling into my new home. My dad has had three fish jump from the tank. A clown, a coral beauty, and a yellow wrasse. I can understand the wrasse, but not the other two. I am going tomorrow and buying some egg-crate to put on the tank to keep the rest of the fish in. Is there anything you can think of why a fish would jump?

If they get spooked, they jump... And unfortunately they're probably more likely to spook when their tank has been moved and they're all in a new environment/habitat. Stressed fish are more likely to jump than calm ones.

if they feel a skin irritation they may try to jump to escape it.
test our core parameters and look for evidence of skin flukes or other ectoparasites.

ive also been told it could be bad water quality.....they jump to get out of it

One of my big banana wrasses jumped on me
