Fluval U4

Hi there,

I have a Fluval U4 internal and a Fluval 205 external filtering my currently cycling tank and I have a question about the media for the U4.

There are 3 'cages' inside the U4, two of which have 1 piece of sponge and then a carbon/poly pad in them, and then the final cage has noodles in it.

I was just wondering about the carbon/poly pad whether its needed in day to day filtering (since the carbon should only last 2 weeks or so) or if I can just use more sponge?

I run a u4 filter and bought some sponge that fits into the space where the carbon pads go. They are supossed to be carbon sponges but i just wash them when i clean the filter and just use them as a sponge. I have got a couple spare if you want them pay the postage and you can have them. PM me if you want them.

I used regular poly filter cut from a large sheet instead of the sewn together poly-carbon thing. I found that to be largely useless.

i have the Fluval U2..and it has the same set up inside mine..i would say thats whats held up my tank cycling (day15 now) ...BUT i halved the mature media and took 1 of the sponge/carbon pads out and put in my second tank, and put the mature half in ( so i have half new, half mature in Both tanks) One tank has had double 0's and one has just started a smidgen of nitrite) so they have worked for me..

I have also left the chalky pellets inside the blue cage in the middle x
