I was thinking about getting a fluval u2 filter to replace my marina s15 HOB filter, would this be a good idea? has anyone got a U version filter that you can say is good, as with it being rated for a 30gal and my tank only being 15 would it be a good upgrade once i've let it run alongside my other filter for a few months? any advice and thoughts on this would be helpfull thanks.

also do you have to use the carbon cartridges? our could I just use extra filter wool as I though carbon is only useful when removing medicaton. thanks.

If you want to use a U-2, go ahead. I would run it in parallel with the existing filter for at least 2 months to allow it to start taking over the biological filtration function. As far as running carbon, use what you wish, it is your filter. I run no carbon at all in my own filters but many people do use some carbon. Each of us does as we think best in this hobby. It is an art, not a science.
