will a hydor 300w external heater fit my fluval fx5 im thinking about buying 1 but dont want to pay out £30 if it wont fit does anyone have experience with these heaters and fx5's
cheers

It should do, I don't see why the tubes wouldn't be a standard size, you could possibly replace them even if they're not.

problem is the pipe work for the fx5 is 24mm and i just read that the conectors on the hydor are 16mm

as you say, they are 1 inch pipes. so, no would seem to be the answer. I would think the restriction, if you use a step down, would adversely affect the performance.

think i will just use an internal then unless i can find 1 thats 24mm you would think someone would make 1 seen as the eheim is 24mm aswell oh well just trying to keep as much out of the tank as pos

forgive me, i don't mean to contradict, but 16mm (internal) is the biggest diameter Eheim use. though 22mm is its external diameter.
Eheim Nose sizes That's, as far as i am aware"

Yeah I think you hit the nail on the head raptorrex, 16mm internal, 22mm external...I'm guessing the 24mm external size for the FX5 is just because the tubes are thicker?

I use Hydor 200/300W with 16mm connectors with my Tetratec EX1200s, but that is a bit smaller than the FX5...

i will get it out the box again tommorow and have another look im in no rush its just for a tank im building over the next few weeks

actually, though i have not got one here, the FX5 does have an internal diameter of 1 inch/24mm(ish). but i do know the Hydor fits the Eheims.

I have an FX5 and the hydor externals do not fit the pipework unless reducers are used I have had to go back to an internal heater

Out of curiosity where can you find "reducers" to allow for these incompatibilities?

in this case, you can't. it would be fine the other way round, making a bigger diameter smaller. but you would be reducing the diamiter by 20%, thats a very large flow restriction, too large. but, if you just want to join two different sized pipes. a hardware store, B&Q, Homebase, indeed even places like Willkinsons or the £1 shop do them.

its going to have to be an internal heater then looked at the eheims and even the 2080 is only 16mm inside diameter pretty impresive flow rate seeing as its 8mm smaller than the fx5 might just buy a 2080 and run it along side the fx5 and add the heater to that instead

There should really be a standard size for all hoses on all external filters and anything connecting to them. It could be made as big as is necessary for all flow rates and everyone will be happy...

had another idea now anyway i think i will put an undergravel heating cable in just been looking on the hydor web site they look good and there out of site aswell
