Hiya all, just wanting a bit of advice... I have bought a Fluval Edge (6 gallon) tank which I have cycled. I was told by Pets at Home that zebra danios would be OK for the tank. In their set up they have 10 but I only bought 4. I have now read that a 6 gallon tank is far too small for these fish. P@H would take the fish back and I don't want to be cruel. Any thoughts on keeping my 4 zebra danios? Thanks (I am a complete novice at fish keeping).

Welcome to the forum!

First off if you got your tank and fish from pets at home I will take a guess and say you added fish after 2 weeks of adding some chemicals right? Afraid this is rubbish advice from pets at home :( Your in whats called a fish in cycle now though if your rehoming the zebra danios you could start a fishless cycle which I can explain later if you want :)

With the Danios, Zebra Danios are like Jack Russels, tiny animals but tons of energy and they are fiesty as anything. I would agree with you on returning these as they do need a long tank good alternatives to them would be fish like Galaxy Rasbora or Chilli Rasbora or a group of male endlers or 3 male endlers and 3 sparkling gourami. These are all small fish with lots of colour that come from slower water and are generally a lot calmer than the zippy zebra danios.

Thanks for your reply. If Pets at Home will take the zebra danios back will I need to empty the tank, rinse gravel, pebbles and plastic plants, refill and treat with the chemicals that came with the Fluval Edge? Will I need to leave it for 3/4 days before I put the new fish in? Also, if P@H do not stock the fish you mentioned, can you let me know if there is a place that I can order fish on the internet? P@H is fairly near and the only pet shop in easy reach for me (I don't get around too well). Thanks for your help.

Hi Jackie :)

Pets at home should take them back but might not give you a refund.

Fluval edges are great tanks when stocked properly but it just takes a bit of knowhow with how to choose the fish but we can help you with that :)

To be honest the best thing you can do if you take the fish back is do whats called a fishless cycle.

The lotions and potions you get with new aquariums are pretty useless Im sorry to say, the bacteria they claim to hold need a constant source of ammonia and oxygen and in a sealed bottle or tub this is impossible so the bacteria just dies off very quickly and the product is redered useless in the shops.

This is an article on the fish less cycle which is a good guide on how and why to do it this way

And this is all about the nitrogen cycle which is well worth a read as it explains all about what goes on in your aquarium especially in the early stages and how it effects your fish.
