ok dumb question, how do clean a fluval 1,2,3,4 plus if its underwater, without dumping all the crap out that it spent weeks sucking up for you?

I do really like the fluval as its really quite and is sand friendly,

but its been a while since I had the crystal clean water that I used to have with the penguin biowheels

any other filters out there for a 20gallon thats low maintenance, does a superb job and is sand friendly (pre-filter),

might be in the market again

You take it outof the tank, dismantle it, rinse out the sponges in some water taken from the tank (NOT tapwater!) then put the filter back in the tank and top it up with clean dechlorinated water.

Personally I dislike the Fluvals (internals I should say !). When you lift them out of the water, all the gunk seeps out
I'm going for an external Eheim 2213 on my 20 gallon now instead. Not cheap at £50 but willing to spend it. Sorry, can't really recommend anything else....

I used to have a fluval 3+ and cleaned it when i did water changes. Rinsing the sponges in the old tank water. Now I have a fluval 204 external filter and a bit more room in the tank!

Best bet probably to put something around it, like a measuring jug, to catch the stuff. I've got the 2+, works fine. Good on a budget, if like me you have one.

ok guys thanks for the info

as far as the water being cloudy, its squeaky clean now

I found a 30PPI or pores per inch filter media made by rene, cut it to length and bingo no cloudy water

I'll have to find some type of container for when I pull the filter out
