When our friend gave us the tank he took out the filters and rinsed them under the tap. He said to do that every couple of months. That was about 6 weeks ago and I have done nothing else with it. From reading various posts here about different filters and maintaining them I'm worried about what i should be doing Can anyone advise me? Thanks.

Hi there! :)

When you do your water changes rinse the filters sponges in old tank water. DON'T rinse them under the tap as this can significantly harm your bacterial colony which can cause all sorts of problems with ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Also when replacing water after a water change make sure the water is dechlorinated with a suitable product that removes chlorine and chloramine.

Thanks Minnnt. Didn't realise I should rinse them each week. :good:

Sorry i didn't explain that bit very well. I do my filters every month, and water changes twice weekly.

Ok. That's fine. I do a water change each week, is this not enough?

yes that is enough fintastic. you can do as many as you like tbh but after a certain point you will stress your fish. I change mine weekly but sometimes twice weekly if i have time

is a 36 litre water change ok for a 95 litre tank as then i only have to add one capfull of dechlorinator?

instead of having to work out fractions
