i got a coating which turns flakey when sqeezed, inside my canister filter hose lines, does anyone know what it is and if its safe?

That's probably just bacterial biofilms rewlyn. Irritating but harmless!

(You can buy bottle brush like things on long snaky metal springy wire (like we used to use to clean our trumpets in band as kids!) that will clean out tubing during one of your filter-maintenance weekends OR, as one member once mentioned, you can just periodically replace your tubing with new tubing as its cheap and the fresh stuff has nicer flexibility on the ends where you want it to maintain a nice seal.)

A shotgun cleaning patch is designed to go through a long tube and will also get the tubing clean. The simplest tool for cleaning is a patch of cloth, a long piece of wire or tough string and a weight. You drop the weight through the tube then use the weight as a handle to pull the cleaning patch through. Unless things are way out of control, 2 or 3 passes with a patch will get the tubing looking almost like new.

Its called a "pull through" and thats ONLY A CLEAN CLOTH !!!!! NOT one designed to clean guns - these are impregnated with chemicals

Any patch I use for the tubes or the shotgun start out as scrap cloth from my wife's sewing projects. Once in a while I get some used cloth from worn out clothes instead. It never occurred to me to use a patch impregnated with oils or cleaning solvents.
