Ok, in my first post I mentioned moving my current female paradise fish to a larger tank witha new female and some others. Well, change of plan, my sister is going to take her and house her with a female, and I'll get to stock the new tank with brand new fish! I'm rather excited, though it's not a very large tank. Only 20 gallons (will somebody please check this, I need to know whether I worked it out right - http://www.bitsforpets.com/product_info.php?products_id=3632 )

Anybody got any sugestions for some good fish? I'm thinking of some neons and maybe a betta.

Rancor.

Oh, and also, can I use my two paradise fish to cycle the new tank, then move them back to their own when I get the new fish? They're very hardy, and back when I didn't know about fish keeping they survived (to my amazement). Would it be alright?

Not going to comment on tank size as I don't have enough time to do that maths.

Neons and betta - I wouldn't. Neons have a horrible reputation for nipping long fins. Maybe some female bettas (6+), some short finned wilds or a short finned betta splendens. I'd avoid long finned fish. Another alternative is some small gouramis.

Cycling - try to avoid using fish. I know they can survive but it doesn't do them any good. You'd feel pretty sore if your parents caused harm to you when it was avoidable, even if they thought you'd probably surivive. Go fishless.

Ok, fishless cycling it is.

I have read through the topic on fishless cycling and I don't really understand it. I'll just keep re-reading it until I do! :D
